Amazon launched its prime membership subscription service in 2005 for $79 per year. The only advantage of being a member was free two-day shipping. Since then, Amazon has raised the price of Prime by twice, to $119 per year. Today, however, prime includes many more benefits, one of which is prime video. Aside from the membership fee, Amazon has a lot to gain by providing big benefits like video streaming to its members. According to data, prime members spend more than twice as much money on Amazon.com as non-prime members. By adding other benefits to Prime, Amazon makes the service more appealing to more people, and by getting them to subscribe, Amazon gains new loyal customers.
